Your Essential DBT Skills Ebook
Why I Wrote the DBT Skills eBook
At DBT Institute of Central Illinois, our mission has always been clear: to make high-quality, evidence-based mental health care accessible to the people and families who need it most. Every day, I see how powerful Marsha Linehan's Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills can be—whether someone is learning to manage intense emotions, reduce impulsive behaviors, strengthen relationships, or simply live a more balanced life.
But I also know that not everyone can immediately join a comprehensive DBT program. Some are still deciding if therapy is right for them, others may be on a waiting list, and many simply want to begin learning skills they can start practicing right away. That’s why I decided to create the Essential DBT Skills eBook.
Making DBT Skills Accessible
The eBook is designed as a practical, user-friendly introduction to some of the most effective DBT strategies. My goal was to take the skills I recommend to clients most and present them in a way that anyone can start applying in their daily life.
I wanted this resource to be approachable, whether you’re a teen, an adult, a parent, or simply someone curious about DBT. It’s not meant to replace therapy, but it can be a meaningful first step toward building skills that last.
Bridging the Gap Between Therapy and Everyday Life
As a Linehan Board Certified DBT Clinician, I am deeply committed to providing treatment that adheres to the gold standard of DBT. At the same time, I recognize that many people benefit from DBT-informed therapy, where skills are integrated into a broader treatment plan. The eBook reflects this dual approach—it gives readers a taste of both the structured skill-building of comprehensive DBT and the flexible application of DBT-informed therapy.
A Resource for Growth and Hope
Ultimately, I wrote this eBook because I believe knowledge is power—and skills create freedom. Even small steps in practicing DBT strategies can open doors to greater emotional balance, healthier relationships, and more effective coping.
My hope is that this eBook serves as both an introduction and an invitation: a chance to explore DBT skills at your own pace, and an encouragement to take the next step toward growth—whether that’s joining one of our comprehensive DBT programs, engaging in DBT-informed therapy with one of our clinicians, or continuing to practice on your own.
